The 21,000-capacity Phones 4u Arena in Manchester
Venue operator SMG Europe has begun rolling out a new integrated POS solution as it continues to upgrade payment technology across its network.
The solution has been created by payment technology specialists Aures Technologies (incorporating J2 Retail Systems), its solutions partner Verteda (formerly Agilysys), and Barclaycard. It offers support for integrated Chip & PIN payments and contactless credit and debit card processing across food and beverage services.
It has been deployed at the 21,000-capacity Phones 4u Arena in Manchester, Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena, the 13,000-capacity, £60m new-build First Direct Arena in Leeds and Manchester’s The Bridgewater Hall.
Group food and beverage director for SMG Europe, Tony Sagar, said he was initially concerned that customers entering PIN numbers would lead to longer queues, and was also wary of card processing costs. A visit to Verteda client The NEC convinced him of the commercial case. “Customers clearly want to use contactless and traditional cards to pay for their purchases,” he said. “We’re confident of the return on our investment of moving to these new payment technologies.”
SMG says the Phones 4u Arena has started to see an increased spend per head across its public food and beverage operations within three months of upgrading.
